Use this definitions page to understand various status of accredited physical therapy programs under CAPTE.

  1. Accredited: Program has been found to be in substantial compliance with the accreditation standards/elements. Graduates of these programs are eligible for licensure.
  2. Probationary Accreditation: Program remains accredited, however accreditation status is in jeopardy. Possible causes of probationary accreditation can be found in the CAPTE Rules of Practice and Procedure. Graduates of these programs are eligible for licensure.
  3. Candidate for Accreditation: Program has submitted an Application for Candidacy, and has received Candidate for Accreditation status with CAPTE. Candidate for Accreditation status indicates the program is making satisfactory progress toward compliance with accreditation criteria, but it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation. Graduates of these programs are eligible for licensure.
  4. Developing: Program has begun the process toward accreditation by submitting an Application for Candidacy. A review of the Application for Candidacy is scheduled and a determination on candidacy is anticipated prior to their stated matriculation date. Note to applicants: Submission of an Application for Candidacy does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Should the program not obtain Candidate for Accreditation status and not be eligible to admit students, applicants to the program will not be refunded the PTCAS application fee paid to apply to the program.
