A defining moment in my career as a physical therapist happened after I took a part-time job as a clinical research and consultant physical therapist in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Center of Excellence at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, or CCF. At the time, I was a doctoral student at Cleveland State University and mother of two boys, ages 1 and 4. My job responsibilities included providing physical therapy care at the CCF's ALS interdisciplinary clinic and conducting motor and functional assessments of patients with ALS enrolled in clinical trials of medications.
